Upadeshasahasri 5.5

5.5 Shankaracharya

caitanyābhāsatāhamastādarthyaṃ ca tadasya yat | idamaṃśaprahāṇe na paraḥ so'nubhavo bhavet ||

The I-notion carries the reflection of consciousness, and it exists for the sake of that [Self]. When its 'this' part is removed, it is the Supreme; that is the [direct] experience.

Meaning today and context

Your everyday sense of 'I' is not an enemy to destroy; it contains the light of awareness. Remove what it wrongly adds ('I am this body, this role, this story') and what remains is the pure 'I'.

Shankaracharya closes chapter 5 by explaining the I-notion: it carries a reflection of consciousness and serves the Self; when its 'this' part (the identification with body and mind) is removed, what remains is the supreme Self.
