A hand that has been cut off and thrown away no longer qualifies the Self. In the same way, [the Self is not qualified] by any of the rest by which it seems to be qualified.
The 'cut-off hand' is an image for what does not belong to the true Self; it is about identity, never about harming or despising the body. If you are thinking of hurting yourself, please call Tele-MANAS 14416 now. Keep caring for your body and health.
Meaning today and context
No one thinks a lost hand took away who they are. The verse asks you to see your looks, job, titles and roles the same way: they describe you for a while, but they are not you.
Shankaracharya opens the chapter 'A Cut-off Hand' with an image: a severed hand is no longer taken as part of oneself, and the same holds for every other attribute.
