Only the knower, the Self, should always be taken [as oneself], alone, leaving aside what is known. Even what is grasped as 'I' is just like the limb that has been cut off.
The 'cut-off hand' is an image for what does not belong to the true Self; it is about identity, never about harming or despising the body. If you are thinking of hurting yourself, please call Tele-MANAS 14416 now. Keep caring for your body and health.
Meaning today and context
Whatever you can observe in yourself, including the busy 'me' with its pride and hurt, is something seen. You are the one who sees it. That gives room to step back from a bruised ego instead of being it.
Shankaracharya says what to take as oneself: the knower alone, never the known; even the sense of 'I' is like the severed limb.
