yāvānsyādidamaṃśo yaḥ sa svato'nyo viśeṣaṇam | viśeṣaprakṣayo yatra siddho jñaścitraguryathā ||
Whatever portion is 'this' is by its very nature other [than the Self] and only an attribute. Where all attributes have vanished, the knower stands established, just as [a man called] Citragu [is someone other than his dappled cows].
Meaning today and context
A man can be pointed out by his cows without being his cows. You can be described by your traits without being them; whatever you can call 'this' is not the one calling it.
Shankaracharya gives a grammar example: a man called 'Citragu' (owner of dappled cows) is known by the cows yet is not the cows; the Self is likewise known when all its marks are removed.
