Upadeshasahasri 6.6

6.6 Shankaracharya

idamaṃśo'hamityatra tyājyo nātmeti paṇḍitaiḥ | ahaṃ brahmeti śiṣṭo'ṃśo bhūtapūrvagaterbhavet ||

In [the notion] 'I', the wise should give up the 'this'-portion as not the Self. The portion that remains [pure consciousness, which the word 'I' pointed to before] is [what is meant by] 'I am Brahman'.

Meaning today and context

'I' usually means a bundle of body, memories and moods. Take away what can be observed and what is left is plain awareness; that, the text says, is what 'I am Brahman' refers to, not the bundle.

Shankaracharya applies the method to the word 'I': its 'this'-part is dropped, and what remains is the meaning of 'I am Brahman'.
