vāyvādīnāṃ yathotpatteḥ pūrvaṃ khaṃ sarvagaṃ tathā | ahamekaḥ sadā sarvaścinmātraḥ sarvago'dvayaḥ ||
As space was all-pervading before the arising of air and the rest, so I am always one, all, consciousness alone, all-pervading, without a second.
Meaning today and context
Before anything takes shape there is open space; before any thought there is awareness. The verse asks you to recognise yourself as that openness.
Shankaracharya completes the contemplation: as space was all-pervading before air and the other elements arose, so the Self is one, consciousness only, everywhere.
