Vivekachudamani 1.140

1.140 Guru to Disciple

tirobhūte svātmanyamalataratejovati pumān | anātmānaṃ mohādahamiti śarīraṃ kalayati | tataḥ kāmakrodhaprabhṛtibhiramuṃ bandhanaguṇaiḥ | paraṃ vikṣepākhyā rajasa uruśaktirvyathayati ||

When one's own spotless, radiant Self is hidden, a person in delusion takes the body, the not-Self, as 'I'. Then the great projecting power of rajas torments him sorely with the binding fetters of desire, anger and the rest.

Meaning today and context

Once we forget who we are and think we are only the body and its wants, desire and anger take over. Remembering a deeper identity gives room to respond rather than be driven.

The guru describes how, once the Self is hidden, one takes the body as 'I' and is tormented by rajas.
