Vivekachudamani 1.146

1.146 Guru to Disciple

ajñānamūlo'yamanātmabandho | naisargiko'nādirananta īritaḥ | janmāpyayavyādhijarādiduḥkha- | pravāhapātaṃ janayatyamuṣya ||

This bondage to the not-Self, rooted in ignorance, is said to be natural, without beginning and without end. It brings on him a fall into the endless stream of suffering: birth, death, disease, old age and the rest.

Meaning today and context

Our habit of identifying with what we are not feels natural because it is so old. Seeing it as a habit rooted in not-knowing, rather than as fate, is the first step to loosening it.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru explains that bondage to the not-Self is rooted in ignorance and keeps a person falling into a stream of suffering.
