This body, born of food, is the sheath made of food. It lives by food and perishes without it. A mass of skin, hide, flesh, blood, bone and waste, it cannot be the self, which is eternally pure.
This verse speaks of the body as impure to loosen identification with it, not to teach self-contempt. Never offer it to someone struggling with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; your body deserves care. If you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
The body depends on food and changes all the time; what you are is the awareness that knows it. This is about not locating your whole worth in your appearance, while still caring for the body you live in.
In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru describes the first sheath, the physical body made of food, and argues it cannot be the Self.
