Vivekachudamani 1.155

1.155 Guru to Disciple

pūrvaṃ janeradhimṛterapi nāyamasti | jātakṣaṇaḥ kṣaṇaguṇo'niyatasvabhāvaḥ | naiko jaḍaśca ghaṭavatparidṛśyamānaḥ | svātmā kathaṃ bhavati bhāvavikāravettā ||

It does not exist before birth or after death. It is born in a moment, its qualities last a moment, its nature is never fixed. It is not one, it is inert, it is seen like a pot. How can it be one's own Self, the knower of all changes of state?

Meaning today and context

Everything about the body changes, yet something in you has known all those changes, from childhood to now. That steady knower is closer to who you are than any stage of the body.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru gives more reasons the body cannot be the Self: it comes and goes, changes, and is seen like an object.
