pāṇipādādimāndeho nātmā vyaṅge'pi jīvanāt | tattacchakteranāśācca na niyamyo niyāmakaḥ ||
The body, with its hands, feet and so on, is not the Self, for life goes on even when a limb is lost, and the powers within are not destroyed. What is controlled cannot be the controller.
Meaning today and context
Losing a limb, an ability or strength through illness or injury does not make a person less themselves. Who you are is not reduced by what the body can or cannot do.
In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru argues from the loss of limbs that the body is not the Self, and that what is controlled cannot be the controller.
