Vivekachudamani 1.157

1.157 Guru to Disciple

dehataddharmatatkarmatadavasthādisākṣiṇaḥ | sata eva svataḥsiddhaṃ tadvailakṣaṇyamātmanaḥ ||

The Self is the witness of the body, its traits, its actions and its states. Being existence itself, its difference from them is self-evident.

Meaning today and context

You can observe your body getting tired, your habits, your moods. The very fact that you can watch them shows you are not simply them.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru says the Self is self-evidently different from the body, being the witness of all that belongs to it.
