śalyarāśirmāṃsalipto malapūrṇo'tikaśmalaḥ | kathaṃ bhavedayaṃ vettā svayametadvilakṣaṇaḥ ||
A heap of bones smeared with flesh, full of filth and very impure: how could this be the knower? The knower is quite different from it.
This verse speaks of the body as impure to loosen identification with it, not to teach self-contempt. Never offer it to someone struggling with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; your body deserves care. If you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

The harsh image is meant to shake a habit: the habit of thinking 'I am only flesh'. The point is that the one who knows is something deeper, not that the body is to be hated.
In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru uses a deliberately stark description of the body to show it cannot be the knower.
