deho'hamityeva jaḍasya buddhiḥ | dehe ca jīve viduṣastvahaṃdhīḥ | vivekavijñānavato mahātmano | brahmāhamityeva matiḥ sadātmani ||
'I am the body': that is the understanding of the dull. The learned feel 'I' in both the body and the individual soul. But the great soul who has discriminating knowledge always has the understanding 'I am Brahman', resting in the true Self.

Our sense of 'I' can be narrow or wide. Growing up inwardly means letting that sense widen, from the body, to the inner person, to the awareness shared by all.
In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru describes three levels of self-understanding: the ignorant, the learned and the one who has realised.
