Vivekachudamani 1.161

1.161 Guru to Disciple

atrātmabuddhiṃ tyaja mūḍhabuddhe | tvaṅmāṃsamedo'sthipurīṣarāśau | sarvātmani brahmaṇi nirvikalpe | kuruṣva śāntiṃ paramāṃ bhajasva ||

Give up the sense of self in this heap of skin, flesh, fat, bone and waste, O deluded one. Make it in Brahman, the Self of all, beyond all distinctions, and enjoy supreme peace.

This verse speaks of the body as impure to loosen identification with it, not to teach self-contempt. Never offer it to someone struggling with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; your body deserves care. If you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When our identity shrinks to the body, every illness, wrinkle and comparison hurts. Resting in a wider sense of self brings a peace that does not depend on how the body is doing.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru directly urges the disciple to drop the sense of 'I' in the body and rest in Brahman.
