Vivekachudamani 1.162

1.162 Guru to Disciple

dehendriyādāvasati bhramoditāṃ | vidvānahaṃ tāṃ na jahāti yāvat | tāvanna tasyāsti vimuktivārtāpy | astveṣa vedāntanayāntadarśī ||

As long as even a learned man does not give up the sense of 'I' in the body, senses and so on, which are unreal and arise from error, there is no talk of liberation for him, even if he has mastered the method of Vedanta to its end.

Meaning today and context

Knowing the theory is not the same as living it. Reading, talks and quotations help only when they actually change how we hold ourselves.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru warns that scholarship is not enough: as long as the 'I'-sense in the body remains, liberation is not even in sight.
