Vivekachudamani 1.163

1.163 Guru to Disciple

chāyāśarīre pratibimbagātre | yatsvapnadehe hṛdi kalpitāṅge | yathātmabuddhistava nāsti kācij | jīvaccharīre ca tathaiva māstu ||

Just as you have no sense of self in your shadow, your reflection, your body in a dream, or a body imagined in the mind, so let there be none in the living body either.

Not identifying with the body never means neglecting it; eat, rest and seek medical care as needed.

Meaning today and context

You do not panic when your reflection looks tired. Holding the body a little more lightly, as something you have rather than all that you are, can ease a lot of anxiety about it.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru gives a practical comparison: you do not take your shadow or dream body to be you; treat the living body the same way.
