Vivekachudamani 1.164

1.164 Guru to Disciple

dehātmadhīreva nṛṇāmasaddhiyāṃ | janmādiduḥkhaprabhavasya bījam | yatastatastvaṃ jahi tāṃ prayatnāt | tyakte tu citte na punarbhavāśā ||

For people of false understanding, the idea that the body is the self is the seed from which the sufferings of birth and the rest spring. So destroy it with effort. When the mind lets it go, there is no further prospect of rebirth.

Meaning today and context

This shift does not happen by itself; it takes steady, deliberate effort, returning again and again to the question of who we really are.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru names the body-as-self idea as the seed of suffering and urges the disciple to remove it with effort.
