Vivekachudamani 1.165

1.165 Guru to Disciple

karmendriyaiḥ pañcabhirañcito'yaṃ | prāṇo bhavetprāṇamayastu kośaḥ | yenātmavānannamayo'nupūrṇaḥ | pravartate'sau sakalakriyāsu ||

This life-breath, joined with the five organs of action, is the sheath made of vital breath. Filled by it, the food-sheath acts as if it had a self, and engages in all its activities.

Meaning today and context

The energy that moves us, breath, vitality, drive, is also something we have, not the whole of who we are. It rises and falls; awareness of it stays.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru describes the second sheath, made of the life-breath, which animates the physical body.
