Vivekachudamani 1.167

1.167 Guru to Disciple

jñānendriyāṇi ca manaśca manomayaḥ syāt | kośo mamāhamiti vastuvikalpahetuḥ | saṃjñādibhedakalanākalito balīyāṃs | tatpūrvakośamabhipūrya vijṛmbhate yaḥ ||

The organs of perception together with the mind make up the sheath made of mind, the cause of the notions 'I' and 'mine' about things. Powerful, working through distinctions of names and the like, it fills the previous sheath and spreads itself out.

Meaning today and context

The mind is constantly labelling: mine, not mine, good, bad. Seeing this labelling as an activity of the mind, not as the plain truth, gives us room to breathe.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru describes the third sheath, the mind, which creates the notions of 'I' and 'mine'.
