Vivekachudamani 1.169

1.169 Guru to Disciple

na hyastyavidyā manaso'tiriktā | mano hyavidyā bhavabandhahetuḥ | tasminvinaṣṭe sakalaṃ vinaṣṭaṃ | vijṛmbhite'sminsakalaṃ vijṛmbhate ||

There is no ignorance apart from the mind. The mind itself is ignorance, the cause of the bondage of worldly existence. When it is destroyed, everything is destroyed; when it expands, everything expands.

Meaning today and context

Most of what weighs on us lives in the mind: the stories, fears and comparisons. When the mind quietens, a whole world of worry quietens with it.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru declares that ignorance is nothing other than the mind, the cause of bondage.
