Having created attachment to the body and all objects, the mind binds a person with it, like an animal with a rope. Later, having created a distaste for them as for poison, that same mind frees him from bondage.
Meaning today and context
A habit holds us because the mind has made it sweet. When we clearly see its real cost, the same mind begins to lose its taste for it, and the rope loosens.
In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru explains how the mind binds through attachment and frees through distaste.
