Vivekachudamani 1.174

1.174 Guru to Disciple

tasmānmanaḥ kāraṇamasya jantoḥ | bandhasya mokṣasya ca vā vidhāne | bandhasya heturmalinaṃ rajoguṇaiḥ | mokṣasya śuddhaṃ virajastamaskam ||

Therefore the mind is the cause of this being's bondage and of its liberation. Stained by rajas it causes bondage; pure, free of rajas and tamas, it leads to liberation.

Meaning today and context

A mind full of agitation and dullness keeps us stuck; a clear, calm mind opens the way out. What we feed and practise shapes which mind we live with.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru concludes that the mind is the cause of both bondage and liberation, depending on its quality.
