Vivekachudamani 1.175

1.175 Guru to Disciple

vivekavairāgyaguṇātirekāc | chuddhatvamāsādya mano vimuktyai | bhavatyato buddhimato mumukṣos | tābhyāṃ dṛḍhābhyāṃ bhavitavyamagre ||

Through an abundance of discrimination and dispassion, the mind becomes pure and fit for liberation. So the wise seeker of freedom must first make these two firm.

Two habits do the heavy lifting: seeing clearly what lasts and what passes, and not clinging to what passes. Build these first; everything else rests on them.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru tells the seeker to first make discrimination and dispassion firm, since they purify the mind.
