Vivekachudamani 1.177

1.177 Guru to Disciple

manaḥ prasūte viṣayānaśeṣān | sthūlātmanā sūkṣmatayā ca bhoktuḥ | śarīravarṇāśramajātibhedān | guṇakriyāhetuphalāni nityam ||

The mind constantly produces for the experiencer all objects, gross and subtle: differences of body, colour, stage of life and caste, of qualities, actions, causes and results.

The labels by which we sort ourselves and others, appearance, status, community, are drawn by the mind. They are not who anyone truly is.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru says the mind produces all objects of experience, including the distinctions people make among themselves.
