Vivekachudamani 1.179

1.179 Guru to Disciple

adhyāsadoṣātpuruṣasya saṃsṛtiḥ | adhyāsabandhastvamunaiva kalpitaḥ | rajastamodoṣavato'vivekino | janmādiduḥkhasya nidānametat ||

A person's transmigration comes from the fault of superimposition, and the bondage of superimposition is created by this mind alone. For one without discrimination, tainted by rajas and tamas, this is the root of the suffering of birth and the rest.

Meaning today and context

We suffer most when we confuse things: a role with a person, a mistake with our worth. Untangling these confusions is the work of discernment.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru names superimposition, mistaking the not-Self for the Self, as the root of transmigration, created by the mind.
