Vivekachudamani 1.183

1.183 Guru to Disciple

manomayo nāpi bhavetparātmā | hyādyantavattvātpariṇāmibhāvāt | duḥkhātmakatvādviṣayatvahetoḥ | draṣṭā hi dṛśyātmatayā na dṛṣṭaḥ ||

Nor can the mind-sheath be the supreme Self, for it has a beginning and an end, it keeps changing, its nature is pain, and it is an object. The seer can never be seen as something seen.

Meaning today and context

Your thoughts and moods come and go, and you can watch them. That means you are not your thoughts; you are the one who knows them.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru gives the reasons why the mind-sheath cannot be the supreme Self.
