Carrying a reflection of consciousness, this modification of nature called the intellect, possessed of knowing and acting, constantly and intensely identifies itself as 'I' with the body, senses and the rest.

Our thinking mind borrows its light from awareness, then claims the body and its doings as 'me'. Seeing that borrowing is the start of seeing through it.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru explains that the intellect, lit by a reflection of consciousness, identifies itself as 'I' with body and senses.
