Vivekachudamani 1.190

1.190 Guru to Disciple

svayaṃ paricchedamupetya buddheḥ | tādātmyadoṣeṇa paraṃ mṛṣātmanaḥ | sarvātmakaḥ sannapi vīkṣate svayaṃ | svataḥ pṛthaktvena mṛdo ghaṭāniva ||

Taking on the limits of the intellect through the error of identifying with that false self, the Supreme, though it is the Self of all, sees itself as separate from itself, as one might see pots as separate from the clay.

Feeling cut off and alone is partly a trick of perspective. Like pots that are all clay, we are separate in shape but not in what we are made of.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru explains how the all-pervading Self, by identifying with the intellect, sees itself as separate, like clay seeing pots as different from it.
