Vivekachudamani 1.198

1.198 Guru to Disciple

anāditvamavidyāyāḥ kāryasyāpi tatheṣyate | utpannāyāṃ tu vidyāyāmāvidyakamanādyapi ||

Beginninglessness is accepted for ignorance and also for its effect. But when knowledge has arisen, what is born of ignorance, though beginningless, [is destroyed, as the next verse says].

Meaning today and context

Something can have been there 'forever' and still end. How long a confusion has lasted says nothing about whether it can be cleared.

The guru answers the objection directly: ignorance and its effects are beginningless, but they still end when knowledge dawns.
