Vivekachudamani 1.217

1.217 Guru to Disciple

jāgratsvapnasuṣuptiṣu sphuṭataraṃ yo'sau samujjṛmbhate | pratyagrūpatayā sadāhamahamityantaḥ sphurannaikadhā | nānākāravikārabhāgina imānpaśyannahaṃdhīmukhān | nityānandacidātmanā sphurati taṃ viddhi svametaṃ hṛdi ||

That which shines most clearly in waking, dream and deep sleep, always pulsing within as 'I, I' in one unvarying way as the inner Self; which watches these ego-led modifications of mind that take many forms, and shines as eternal bliss and awareness: know that, in your heart, to be your own Self.

Meaning today and context

Beneath every changing thought and feeling there is the simple sense 'I am', the same in childhood and old age, in joy and in pain. Resting in that, rather than in the moods, gives a quiet steadiness.

The guru tells the disciple where to find the Self: as the ever-present 'I' shining in all three states.
