Vivekachudamani 1.222

1.222 Guru to Disciple

viśoka ānandaghano vipaścit | svayaṃ kutaścinna bibheti kaścit | nānyo'sti panthā bhavabandhamukteḥ | vinā svatattvāvagamaṃ mumukṣoḥ ||

free of sorrow, full of bliss, wise; such a person fears nothing from anywhere. For one who seeks liberation there is no other path out of the bondage of worldly existence than knowing the truth of oneself.

Inner fearlessness does not mean ignoring real danger. If you are unsafe, call 112; if fear or grief is overwhelming, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Fear grows out of feeling small, separate and threatened. The deepest fearlessness comes not from controlling everything outside, but from knowing who you are.

The guru completes the sentence: the knower of the Self is free of sorrow and fear, and there is no other way to liberation.
