Vivekachudamani 1.229

1.229 Guru to Disciple

kenāpi mṛdbhinnatayā svarūpaṃ | ghaṭasya saṃdarśayituṃ na śakyate | ato ghaṭaḥ kalpita eva mohān | mṛdeva satyaṃ paramārthabhūtam ||

No one can show the nature of a pot as something different from clay. Therefore the pot is only imagined, through delusion; clay alone is real, the true substance.

Meaning today and context

Try to point to the 'pot' without pointing to clay: you can't. In the same way, the text invites you to look for what is underneath all the forms that come and go.

The guru continues the clay-and-pot argument.
