Vivekachudamani 1.236

1.236 Guru to Disciple

bhrāntasya yadyadbhramataḥ pratītaṃ | brahmaiva tattadrajataṃ hi śuktiḥ | idaṃtayā brahma sadaiva rūpyate | tvāropitaṃ brahmaṇi nāmamātram ||

Whatever a deluded person perceives through error is Brahman alone, just as the 'silver' is really mother-of-pearl. Brahman is always what is being described as 'this'; what is superimposed on Brahman is a mere name.

Meaning today and context

When we misjudge something, the thing itself was there all along; only our label was wrong. Correcting the label, not destroying the thing, is what understanding does.

The guru gives the example of mother-of-pearl mistaken for silver.
