Vivekachudamani 1.248

1.248 Guru to Disciple

sa devadatto'yamitīha caikatā | viruddhadharmāṃśamapāsya kathyate | yathā tathā tattvamasītivākye | viruddhadharmānubhayatra hitvā ||

Just as in 'this is that Devadatta' the identity is stated by setting aside the conflicting parts (then and now, there and here), so in the sentence 'that you are', the conflicting qualities on both sides are set aside.

Meaning today and context

You recognise an old friend despite years, distance and changed looks. In the same way, beneath all your changes there is something that has stayed the same.

The guru gives the classic example: in 'this is that Devadatta', the person is the same though place and time differ.
