By 'not gross' and similar words, the scripture rejects the unreal; what remains is self-established, like space, beyond reasoning. Therefore this perceived world is mere appearance. The guru tells the disciple to reject what is falsely taken as the Self and to know himself as Brahman, undivided awareness.
