Vivekachudamani 1.267

1.267 Guru to Disciple

jñāte vastunyapi balavatī vāsanānādireṣā | kartā bhoktāpyahamiti dṛḍhā yāsya saṃsārahetuḥ | pratyagdṛṣṭyātmani nivasatā sāpaneyā prayatnān | muktiṃ prāhustadiha munayo vāsanātānavaṃ yat ||

Even when the reality is known, this beginningless tendency remains strong: the firm sense 'I am the doer and the enjoyer', which is the cause of one's bondage. It must be removed with effort, by living in the Self with an inward gaze. The sages here call liberation the thinning of these tendencies.

Meaning today and context

Understanding something is not the same as living it. Old habits of thinking come back even after insight, and patient, steady practice is needed to wear them down.

The guru warns that even after the truth is known, the beginningless habit-tendency (vāsanā) of 'I am the doer and enjoyer' remains strong and must be removed with effort.
