Vivekachudamani 1.289

1.289 Guru to Disciple

svaprakāśamadhiṣṭhānaṃ svayaṃbhūya sadātmanā | brahmāṇḍamapi piṇḍāṇḍaṃ tyajyatāṃ malabhāṇḍavat ||

Becoming, as the ever-existent Self, that self-luminous ground of all, give up this whole universe and this body too, like a vessel of filth.

Calling the body a 'vessel of filth' or 'corpse' is a teaching about identity, not self-contempt. Never offer it to someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; care for your body. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The point is not to hate the body or the world but to stop taking them as who you are. What you most deeply are is the light by which they are known.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, tells the disciple to rest as the self-luminous Self and drop identification with both the cosmos and the body.
