Vivekachudamani 1.294

1.294 Guru to Disciple

ahaṃpadārthastvahamādisākṣī | nityaṃ suṣuptāvapi bhāvadarśanāt | brūte hyajo nitya iti śrutiḥ svayaṃ | tatpratyagātmā sadasadvilakṣaṇaḥ ||

The true meaning of 'I' is the witness of the ego and the rest, eternal, for its presence is experienced even in deep sleep. Scripture itself says it is 'unborn, eternal'. That inner Self is other than both the gross and the subtle.

Meaning today and context

Even in dreamless sleep something remains, which is why you wake and say 'I slept well'. The awareness that watches the ego is not hurt by its failures or puffed up by its successes.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, says the true referent of 'I' is the witness of the ego, present even in deep sleep, unborn and eternal as scripture says.
