Vivekachudamani 1.296

1.296 Guru to Disciple

ato'bhimānaṃ tyaja māṃsapiṇḍe | piṇḍābhimāninyapi buddhikalpite | kālatrayābādhyamakhaṇḍabodhaṃ | jñātvā svamātmānamupaihi śāntim ||

Therefore give up identifying with this lump of flesh, and with the one who identifies with it, a creation of the intellect. Knowing your Self as undivided awareness, untouched in all three times, attain peace.

Calling the body a 'vessel of filth' or 'corpse' is a teaching about identity, not self-contempt. Never offer it to someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; care for your body. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Much of our anxiety is about the body and the ego's story: looks, health, status. Knowing that what you are is not diminished by any of these can bring a quiet peace.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, concludes that one should drop identification with the body and with the ego that claims it, and find peace in knowing the undivided Self.
