Vivekachudamani 1.297

1.297 Guru to Disciple

tyajābhimānaṃ kulagotranāma- | rūpāśrameṣvārdraśavāśriteṣu | liṅgasya dharmānapi kartṛtādīṃs | tyaktvā bhavākhaṇḍasukhasvarūpaḥ ||

Give up identifying with family, lineage, name, form and stage of life, which rest on this moist corpse, the body. Give up too the traits of the subtle body, such as doership, and be undivided bliss itself.

This is about letting go of identification, not about abandoning one's family or duties. Lineage and caste are never a measure of anyone's worth. The body called 'a corpse' is a teaching about identity, not self-contempt; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Family name, community, looks and life stage are labels we carry, not our deepest self. Holding them lightly frees us from pride in them and from shame about them.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, tells the disciple to drop identification with family, lineage, name, form and stage of life, all resting on the body, and with the subtle body's sense of being the doer.
