Vivekachudamani 1.305

1.305 Guru to Disciple

ahaṃkāre kartaryahamiti matiṃ muñca sahasā | vikārātmanyātmapratiphalajuṣi svasthitimuṣi | yadadhyāsātprāptā janimṛtijarāduḥkhabahulā | pratīcaścinmūrtestava sukhatanoḥ saṃsṛtiriyam ||

Give up at once the notion of 'I' in the ego, the doer: it is changeful, borrows the reflection of the Self, and robs you of your own standing. By identifying with it, you, the inner Self, consciousness and bliss itself, have fallen into this round of becoming, full of the pains of birth, death and old age.

Meaning today and context

The ego shines only with borrowed light, yet it takes credit and carries all the worry. Seeing that it is not you takes much of the fear out of ageing, loss and change.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, urges the disciple to drop at once the sense of 'I' in the ego, the doer, which borrows the Self's reflection; superimposing oneself on it is what brought about samsara.
