Vivekachudamani 1.309

1.309 Guru to Disciple

samūlakṛtto'pi mahānahaṃ punaḥ | vyullekhitaḥ syādyadi cetasā kṣaṇam | saṃjīvya vikṣepaśataṃ karoti | nabhasvatā prāvṛṣi vārido yathā ||

Even when cut at the root, the mighty ego, if stirred up again by the mind for even a moment, comes back to life and causes a hundred distractions, as a cloud driven by the wind in the rainy season.

Meaning today and context

Old patterns of pride or hurt can return in a moment of rumination, even after real progress. Expect it, notice it quickly, and don't feed it.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, warns that even an uprooted ego, if called back to mind for a moment, revives and causes a hundred distractions, like a rain cloud driven by wind.
