Having restrained the enemy, the ego, give it no opening at all by brooding on sense objects. That brooding is what brings it back to life, as water revives a withered lemon tree.
Meaning today and context
Cravings and grudges come back when we keep watering them with thought. What we dwell on grows; what we stop feeding withers.
The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, says that once the ego, the enemy, is restrained, it must be given no opening by brooding on sense objects, which revive it as water revives a withered lemon tree.
