Vivekachudamani 1.311

1.311 Guru to Disciple

dehātmanā saṃsthita eva kāmī | vilakṣaṇaḥ kāmayitā kathaṃ syāt | ato'rthasandhānaparatvameva | bhedaprasaktyā bhavabandhahetuḥ ||

Only one who stands identified with the body is a desirer. How could one who knows himself distinct from it be a desirer? Therefore being bent on pursuing objects, which assumes separateness, is itself the cause of the bondage of becoming.

Craving starts from feeling incomplete and separate. The more we sense our own wholeness, the less we need to chase.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, argues that only one who identifies with the body desires; so dwelling on objects, which assumes separation, is the cause of bondage.
