Vivekachudamani 1.313

1.313 Guru to Disciple

vāsanāvṛddhitaḥ kāryaṃ kāryavṛddhyā ca vāsanā | vardhate sarvathā puṃsaḥ saṃsāro na nivartate ||

From the growth of latent tendencies comes action, and from the growth of action, the tendencies grow; so in every way a person's round of becoming increases and does not cease.

This is how habits work: each time we act on an urge, it gets stronger, and the stronger urge pushes us to act again. Seeing the loop is the first step to breaking it.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, explains the cycle: latent tendencies (vasanas) produce action, and action strengthens the tendencies, so samsara never ends.
