For the wise, there is no greater misfortune than carelessness about one's own true nature. From it comes delusion, from delusion the I-sense, from that bondage, and from bondage suffering.
Meaning today and context
Suffering often starts with a small lapse of attention that grows step by step. Catching the first step is far easier than undoing the last.
The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, traces the chain of downfall: carelessness about one's true nature leads to delusion, then the I-sense, then bondage, then suffering.
