Vivekachudamani 1.324

1.324 Guru to Disciple

yathāpakṛṣṭaṃ śaivālaṃ kṣaṇamātraṃ na tiṣṭhati | āvṛṇoti tathā māyā prājñaṃ vāpi parāṅmukham ||

Just as moss pushed aside does not stay apart for even a moment, so maya covers even the wise one if he turns away.

Meaning today and context

Clarity needs renewing; confusion closes in again quickly, like moss on a pond. Regular practice keeps the water clear.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, compares maya to moss on water, which closes back the moment it is pushed aside, covering even the wise one who turns away.
