Vivekachudamani 1.329

1.329 Guru to Disciple

saṃkalpaṃ varjayettasmātsarvānarthasya kāraṇam | jīvato yasya kaivalyaṃ videhe sa ca kevalaḥ | yatkiṃcitpaśyato bhedaṃ bhayaṃ brūte yajuḥśrutiḥ ||

Therefore give up wilful imagining, the cause of every trouble. One who is free while living remains free when the body falls. The Yajurveda scripture says that one who sees even the slightest difference has fear.

Meaning today and context

Much fear comes from seeing ourselves as separate and under threat. Less spinning of plans and fantasies, and more sense of connection, means less fear.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, tells the seeker to give up wilful imagining, the cause of all troubles; one free while living stays free after the body falls, and scripture says fear comes from seeing any difference.
