Vivekachudamani 1.332

1.332 Guru to Disciple

satyābhisaṃdhānarato vimukto | mahattvamātmīyamupaiti nityam | mithyābhisandhānaratastu naśyed | dṛṣṭaṃ tadetadyadacauracaurayoḥ ||

One devoted to holding fast to the Real is freed and gains his own lasting greatness. But one devoted to holding fast to the false perishes, as is seen in the case of the innocent man and the thief.

Meaning today and context

What we hold to shapes what happens to us. Clinging to what is true protects us; clinging to illusions, about ourselves or the world, eventually burns.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, contrasts holding to the Real with holding to the false, citing the old ordeal in which the innocent are unharmed and the thief perishes.
